The focus of this MBA is to educate and train business leaders that can manage firms through growth and change processes. Why are such knowledge and skills important?
Markets are constantly becoming more global and competitive, and advances in technology and communication opens up for new ways of providing value to customers. In this situation of increased pressure from markets, three main areas are specifically important, and we have focused these areas in our MBA program:
STRATEGIC -
To take action, managers need to know the direction in which to lead the firm. Should the company target the high end customers, or focus on low cost? Should the firm go global or stay local? Outlining the direction requires a deep understanding of the market, the competition and the organization.
CHANGE -
When the direction is known, the manager must make the company ready to change. Some changes are radical, causing a total rethink of the organization and its market positioning, whereas others are smaller, but still important to focus on. Teams and projects are necessary change management tools.
MANAGEMENT-
How can strategic change be managed and executed by the people in the organization? How are people motivated to change and what can the company does to attract and develop the employees? A strategic change process requires constant attention to the alignment of all management processes in the firm – operations, finance, supply chain, IT, organization and HRM- to make sure that all processes support the overall strategy. Consequently, the implications of the strategic change for all firm activities must be thoroughly understood if the change is to happen.
All of the modules in this MBA will touch on these three areas. However, some modules, like strategy, marketing and economics are more concerned with strategy issues, some modules are more change oriented, like project management and organization, whereas you will also find some modules that focus mostly on the management side, like financial management, supply chain management, HRM, leadership and operations management. In addition to the 15 modules you will also write a thesis where you analyze one strategic change management process.
Nordic Teaching Style:
The Nordic Countries consist of Norway , Sweden , Denmark , Finland and Iceland . The combined population is less than 30 million. People live scattered and the climate is quite harsh. Consequently Nordic people are independent, outspoken, and used to be responsible for their own decisions.
The Nordic countries are all social democracies favoring values like equality, discussion and decisions based on inputs from many.
Due to the relative small size of the countries, there has always been extensive interaction between the Nordic countries and the rest of the European continent and the US . Many people emigrated from the Nordic countries around 1900, and there are strong cultural and intellectual ties to North America.
The Nordic teaching style therefore integrates influences from US case based and Continental European lecture style, with Nordic values of independence and expression of meaning through discussions. Students are introduced to a mix of teaching methods and are encouraged to think independently and share their opinions with other classmates to reach solutions that are not based on the effort of one, but the combined intellectual effort of many.
